Students who enroll at Truman will not be guaranteed the opportunity to major in Interdisciplinary Studies. The program is intended for students with strong academic records, high motivation, a clear sense of direction, and the desire to design a challenging academic program.
Note: Students applying for an Interdisciplinary Studies Major should understand clearly that, while they have an area of focus (for example, Gender Studies), it is expected that a central object of their study will be the nature of knowledge, and how institutional structures such as disciplines, and innovations such as interdisciplinarity, have affected what counts as knowledge.
Students who wish to pursue this degree must apply for admission to the program. A faculty oversight committee and the Director of Interdisciplinary Studies will use the following guidelines to identify successful applicants:
Students must complete one year of classes at Truman as full-time students before they can apply to the program; transfer students with 60 or more hours may apply to the program after one semester at Truman as full-time students;
Students must have a Truman GPA of at least 2.8;
Students must propose an individualized curriculum plan that is commensurate with the philosophy, focus, intentions, size, and rigor of other Truman major curricula.
Finally, students must complete at least 50 credit hours taken in semesters that begin after their program of study is approved.
